Every year

These open each January, starting in 2027.

  1. Send your year-end figures

Your pay for the year and the plan account's December 31 statement. We ask for them in January.

    You · To do

  2. Annual valuation certified

The actuary values the plan, certifies the funding figures on Schedule SB, and sets next year's range.

Actuary · Waiting on an earlier step

  3. Sign and file Form 5500-EZ

We prepare it once plan assets pass $250,000, or in the plan's final year. You sign it and file it with the IRS.

How it was set up

  1. Confirm your business and pay details

Your business's legal name and tax ID, your date of birth, and your pay for the last three years. The actuary works from these, not from the estimate.

    You · Done

  2. Actuary confirms your contribution range

An enrolled actuary checks the plan design against your verified pay and sets this year's minimum and maximum.

  3. Plan documents prepared

We prepare your adoption agreement, trust agreement and summary plan description on IRS pre-approved documents.

    Maxed · Done

  4. Review and sign your plan documents

You sign as the business adopting the plan, and as trustee. The $2,000 balance of your first-year fee is charged when you sign, and your deposit stops being refundable.

    You · Done

  5. Apply for the plan's tax ID

The plan's trust needs its own employer identification number. The IRS application takes about ten minutes online and we tell you what to enter on each screen. The IRS issues one number per person per day.

    You · Done

  6. Brokerage account forms filled in

We fill in the account application for Schwab or Fidelity, in the plan's name, for you to sign.

    Maxed · Done

  7. Open the plan's brokerage account

Sign the application in ink and mail it. When the account opens, connect it so your plan page follows its value.

    You · Done

  8. Choose how the account is invested

Your plan credits your account with what its investments earn, so how you invest decides how your account grows. Read how that works before you choose.

    You · Done

  9. Make your first contribution

Move money from the business account into the plan's brokerage account, anywhere in your range, by the deadline. Then record it here.
